Every year in the United States there are thousands of amputations performed. Amputations can be performed on various parts of the human body. The most common types of amputations include partial hand, arm, wrist, finger, foot, wrist, and leg amputations. Amputations can be caused by a variety circumstances. Sometimes infections, diabetes, or gangrene can lead to a person needing to have an amputation. Sometimes amputation procedures are performed when they were not necessary. An all too common cause of amputations is work related accidents, such as
- Operating Heavy Machinery;
- Using Saws (often times table or chain saws);
- Using Farm Equipment; and
- Construction Work (either in an industry or while in a facility).
Traumatic Amputations can also occur from:
- Car or Truck Accidents;
- 18 Wheeler Accidents;
- Some Defective Drugs
- Oil Field Work; and
- Work aboard Sea Vessels.
One common link between the above work related amputations is that, in many of cases, they can be avoided. Precautions can be taken on to avoid work place related amputations. Safe product designs, adequate supervision, effective warnings regarding workplace hazards, as well as other controls, can be powerful in the prevention of workplace injuries that result in amputation. Too often these preventative measures are not implemented, or effectively implemented, and the result is an injury requiring an amputation that leads to large financial and other costs. An amputee and their family should look to the various forms of compensation that may be available to them in order to deal with these costs.
