The Violence Continues

Retired FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Tabman comments on the recent multiple homicides in Alabama.

OVERLAND PARK, KS, March 13, 2009 /Human Resources PR News/ -- Back in September 2008, Michael Tabman sat down with Diane Stafford of the Kansas City Star newspaper to discuss the growing trend of workplace violence. Tabman stressed the need to identify flashpoints and intervene before a situation turned to tragedy. He also warned of continued violence when he spoke with Judy Greenwald of Business Insurance magazine later that year.

"At this point, we do not know what drove 28 year old Michael McLendon to brutally kill so many innocent people, but there is no surprise that his former places of employment somehow figured into his deadly rampage," Tabman said. McLendon killed several people at a food distributorship where he reportedly had just quit his job days earlier. "Also, not surprisingly," Tabman added, "was that he wound up shooting himself. That seems to be the pattern." During his killing spree, McLendon drove to a plant that he had worked at years earlier, and according to reports, from which he was forced to resign. It was at this plant that he killed himself."

"The workplace is such an integral aspect of our life, that many workplace problems - real or imagined - can drive someone to extremes, especially if some external event acts as a trigger or catalyst, such as marital problems." Tabman continued. The need to train employers in the detection, prevention and response to workplace violence, unfortunately grows every day as the economy falters and many hopes and dreams slip away.

Tabman's consulting firm, SPIRIT Asset Protection, LLC has brought on two retired federal agents to address the growing demand for workplace violence training. Tabman's Kansas City Star and Business Insurance articles and other related information can be found at the company web site www.spiritllc.biz or call 913.499.0260.
